Regarding stamp duty and registration and other charges u/s 80C

Dear Manish,

My wife and myself had purchased a flat last month. We both are joint owner and joint loan applicants (loan amount Rs. 30 lakhs). We had paid registration charges & stamp duty (total Rs. 198200), VAT (Rs. 41250) and service tax (Rs. 102000, this amount is paid to the builder). We also paid stamp duty (Rs.18000) for mortgage of title deed in favor of bank. Are all these payments (i.e. registration charges & stamp duty, VAT, service tax and stamp duty for mortgage) covered under section 80C? Moreover, the receipts for all these are in my name (as I am the first applicant). Can my wife also claim deductions u/s 80C for all these?

Kindly reply and oblige.
Thanks and regards,
Dinesh Naidu

Dear Dinesh, being co-owner you and your wife can only claim 198200 Rs. divided between both of you. All other expenses are not available for section 80C benefit.

    Thanks

    Ashal
