NEFT Transfer to incorrect account due to a typo in account num

Hi, I have given my account num for my friend for NEFT transfer of Rs. 7,500/- from HDFC to ICICI. There was a typo in account num insted of 0169 it become 0196, So amount got credited to another account. When I checked with the ICICI Bank, they varified the transation and confirmed yes it has happened. When I requested them to raise the request, the manager mentioned that as the amount got debited from my Friend account only he can log a compalint at HDFC. In this NEFT transaction most of the INFO would not be matching however it happened, I understood that NEFT are done ONLY WITH ACCOUNT NUMBER only. My friend had written to the bank and they mentioned nothing can be done about this from their side. Since both banks said nothing can be done. I accepted it as my mistake. Is there anything that can be done in this kind of situvation to get back the money? Thanks for your response.

I always send a very small amount to test if i have added the payee correctly before transferring the full amount.

Banks can’t give you any details but they should have a mechanism to contact the recipient on your behalf..

logically it seems to me that your friend may request through your banker to the account no. holder (even without knowing his/her name) with details requesting him /her to return thus transferred a/m to his account. as the a/m is not too bog, i think, the person concerned would return. i do not know legal way to force him.
