Is it mandatory to file ITR if TDS is deducted ?

I have the following query for a person whose source of income is from bank interest and total income is less than 1.5Lakh, as follows:

1. If there is a small TDS of say Rs 800/- or so and if no refund is sought, then, is it mandatory to file ITR as there is a TDS?

2. Is it mandatory to file ITR (either efiling or paper filing) just because the person has registered at income tax efiling site for filing e-return?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Just because TDS is deducted, that does not mean that you dont have to file the returns . Filing returns is mandatory is you have paid tax and your taxable income is above the limit.

Filing return is a way to declare your actual income.

Thanks Manish. Another connected query is, if the bank interest received by wife is clubbed with husband’s income for tax purpose and if there is already a TDS on the interest, then how to show this in the IT returns, as the TDS will be reflected in wife’s 26AS form. Any idea?
      Thanks
