If you wish to trade in secondary market such as NSE or any exchange then you need to have demat account.
If not try finding any mutual fund which has specific exposure to gold ETF and try investing there. In that case you dont need demat a/c.
Again I am not sure and I may be plain wrong as well. But try fundsindia website and check out for gold etf funds. May be of help.

There is no alternate for that. You need to open demat account for that.
