Banks charging for SMS alerts should be optional and not compulsory ?

Recently most Banks have started charging for SMS alerts which used to be free. What ever be the charges, the issue is that some Banks like HDFC Bank have made it a option i.e if a A/c holder opts for SMS service he will be charged as per rules. If he does not want the service, he will not be charged. However, Public Sector Banks like SBI Group do not have any such option. That is, whether an A/c holder wants or not, he has to compulsorily pay for the service.

I feel this is absurd and illogical. Customers cannot be forced to use some service and be charged for it. It has to made optional just like HDFC Bank. If anybody is aware of RBI regulations regarding this issue, kindly help the common man out.

Dear Pradeep, SMS service is optional. Just look at the new account opening form. You may request to cancel your SMS subscription if you want to. Please contact your Branch now.

    thanks
