I recently took claim for a surgery under my current health insurance (Apollo Munich) and in the process realized the inadequacy of a limited amount health insurance. To hedge my risk, I decided to take a Topup/Supertop health policy along with my regular health insurance.
I have been doing some research for buying a Topup/Supertop health insurance and thought sharing the research may be useful for few others.
Topup : Will cover individual claim above a certain deductible in a year.
Supertop : Will cover aggregate claims above a certain deductible in a year.
If you think about it, taking a Supertop makes sense if one is looking to top up her health insurance coverage.
Currently, there are three Supertop products in market:
1. United India Supertop Plan
2. Max Bupa Hearbeat Plan
3. HDFC Ergo Surakasha Topup (Plus)
1. United India
The product is the first in this category. However the overall approach of United India to this product is not very encouraging for a consumer.

2. Max Bupa
The plan seems reasonable however the sum insured above deductible is only 2 Lac/3Lac, which seemed lower to me.

HDFC Ergo
Offers a good plan and has sum insured upto 5 Lac with various options of deductibles 2Lac/3 Lac

I finally chose HDFC Ergo Suraksha Topup for 5 Lac (sum insured) with 2 Lac deductible.
Would love to hear from others on their experience/questions on this.
