I recently took claim for a surgery under my current health insurance (Apollo Munich) and in the process realized the inadequacy of a limited amount health insurance. To hedge my risk, I decided to take a Topup/Supertop health policy along with my regular health insurance.
I have been doing some research for buying a Topup/Supertop health insurance and thought sharing the research may be useful for few others.
Topup : Will cover individual claim above a certain deductible in a year.
Supertop : Will cover aggregate claims above a certain deductible in a year.
If you think about it, taking a Supertop makes sense if one is looking to top up her health insurance coverage.
Currently, there are three Supertop products in market:
1. United India Supertop Plan
2. Max Bupa Hearbeat Plan
3. HDFC Ergo Surakasha Topup (Plus)
1. United India
The product is the first in this category. However the overall approach of United India to this product is not very encouraging for a consumer.

2. Max Bupa
The plan seems reasonable however the sum insured above deductible is only 2 Lac/3Lac, which seemed lower to me.

HDFC Ergo
Offers a good plan and has sum insured upto 5 Lac with various options of deductibles 2Lac/3 Lac

I finally chose HDFC Ergo Suraksha Topup for 5 Lac (sum insured) with 2 Lac deductible.
Would love to hear from others on their experience/questions on this.

Dear Sandep, Had you checked with your current insurer regarding TOP up & Super Top up?
Thanks
Ashal
Apollo Munich ( my current insurer) doesn’t offer a Topup/Supertop policy. Although they have something called ‘Optima Restore’ policy that offers the flair of a Topup policy, however this doesn’t serve my purpose.
You may also check out Bajaj Allianz’s Extra Cover with deductibles of 2, 3 and 5 lakhs, covering upto 15 lakhs.
@ Ashish
I guess the Bajaj Allianz is a topup policy and NOT Supertop.
@Sandeep,
My mistake. Yes it is just top up. Since you have done the research, wanted to know is it necessary to have a regular plan in your name first to opt for a super top-up. e.g., if I have a regular plan in my name and take the top-up floater (if available) in my wife’s name? (Basically for the tax benefits).

To take a Topup/Supertop policy – one doesn’t need to have a regular health policy. Topup/Supertop requires one to choose a deductible (threshold) beyond which this benefit kicks in.
Sandeep,
Can you expand on this:
“However the overall approach of United India to this product is not very encouraging for a consumer”
@ FFC
United India folks are not very keen on entertaining people who wish to take their Supertop policy. I was told by United folks that there is no guarantee that the underwriter will issue me a policy ( no issue with my medical history). The general lethargy of a PSU. Even you have to get your medical tests done on your own.
