Letter from Income Tax dept has made me worried. Pls help !!!

Dear Friends,

I had invested 5,00,000 in an FD in Jan 2011 that matured in Sep 2012. I am in 30% bracket. Although bank had deducted 10% tax, because of my ignorance of tax rules, I forgot to pay my remaining 20% tax before 31st March 2013. Thanks to Jagoinvestor.com.,  I finally became aware of tax rules, I paid self assessment tax for remaining 20% in July 2013. But now I have got the following letter from IT Department. Pls suggest further course of action.

************************************************

As per record of this office, it is noticed that you have paid an amount of Rs. XXXXX by way of self assessment tax u/s 140A for Asst. Year 2013-14 on xx-Jul-2013 which was infact required to be paid u/s 210 of the income tax Act as advance tax.

2. As per provisions of the Income Tax Act, self assessment tax payment attract the penal action of charging of interest u/s 234B and 234C. Thus, in order to avoid the charging of interest and above punitive provisions, it is necessary that payment of proper amount of advance tax should be made of the current year.

3. You are therefore, requested to attend my office on or before 17-Sep-2013. In case, you fail to do so you will be liable for further action under the relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961 as stated above.

*********************************************************

Now I received the letter after 17-Sep-2013, so I was not able to go to IT office. Secondly because the Assessment ward was incorrect in my return, the letter has been received from IT office in my home town around 500 KMs away from current place of residence.

Few questions for you:

1. Since I couldn’t attend the office as requested in letter, am I liable for further action although letter was received after 17-Sept?

2. Since I have paid the tax, although late, what else is left to be paid as penalty? I would like to pay it off and get this closed.

Your help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
