   Hi ashal

   I have salary account with hdfc bank and want to close it down as have shifted the location and have not been using the account from past 1.5 years. I visited my nearest hdfc branch to close my ac but I am charged with rs 8500 as penalty. I have escalated my problem to customer care department. I don’t think am suppose to pay anything to the bank for not keeping minimum bal. If the bank has problem they should have deactivated my account for having zero bal. Y am I charged for it. Its ridiculous.

      Sorry, but charging penalty for minimum balance is as per RBI guidelines and banking standard. How will the bank know if you want to close the account or not, They cant close it just because it has ZERO balance.

   Dear Karthik, I do not think that any penalty or charge ‘ll be levied on account closure.

   Dear Karthik, let the money remain there in the account. Visit the HDFC branch, with your ATM card and cheque book. Before closing the account, staff ‘ll ask for a cheque to withdraw the amount in cash to you. If the amount is huge, you can transfer a major part of it before visiting the branch for account closing.

      Thanks for the reply Ashal. I have been maintaining a quarterly balance of 20K. Do you see any charges getting levied for closure of account ? Please share your experiences if any.
