Safe to give credit card details during hotel booking?

How safe is it to give credit card details to a hotel for securing advanced booking? Hotel claims that they will not bill the card till I check-in. The credit card is demanded for payment guarantee.

Is it safe to give away credit-card details like this? Do I expose myself to any added threat with respect to normal usage of credit cards at shops? Opinion/tips welcome.

Well it all depends how the hotel / agent is storing your details. I have seen so many cases where this is written on paper for later action. Ideally it should be directly entered into a system which encrypts the details so that it can not be viewed. However, you can not prevent it being written else where while you are on a phone.

A word of relief – give a call to your credit card provider and ask him about the cover against fraudulent transactions as long as you can tell them promptly. I suffered such a transaction once and the credit card company reversed it after investigation.

Hence, a word of caution – do not use your debit card for online transactions / telephonic (as it is not covered like credit card).

  2. Dear Samabaran, for the given situation my take ‘ll be to go for hotel booking via online booking sites like yatra, makemytrip, goibibo, travelguru……………

    Thanks

    Nice Information 🙂

  4. When you say details ? What do you mean by that ?

Are you talking about just the CARD NUMBER or even the 3 digit PIN written at the back ?

I would say never give that ! . let me tell you why

    1. There are companies where even those 3 digit PIN Is not required. Because that depends from country to country. If I know your credit card number and expiry date – HOLD YOUR BREATH – I know online websites where I can use it and buy something ! .. YES , thats true , I can buy something and it will not ask me that PIN number .

    2. If someone knows your PIN + Card number ,they can make some transaction online, though next level authentication is there, but still why to take risk !

Always tell the hotel’s that you do not own a card, this is just a trick they do by asking the card , they know that people will give it if they do want a 100% guaranteed reservation .
