Relationship Proof for Nominee Change in HDFC Life Policy

POSTED BY Zaib ON November 4, 2012 11:02 am COMMENTS (18)

Hi guys,

Yesterday I went to the HDFC Life office to change the nominee to my wife in my policy, as I recently got married.

The thing is, they told me that they cannot accept the change without a relationship proof. Though I argued with them that how is it possible that nowhere else have I ever faced the requirement of relationship proof for a change/addition of nominee. To which they replied that the rules have changed recently, which I didn’t buy at all. Anyway they didn’t accept the change request and I had to return.

Not that I cannot provide the proof, but my question is, whether this is even true? And secondly, if I would like to nominate my brother/sister, what kind of relationship proof do they expect? And moreoever, if someone doesn’t have any family and wants to nominate his/her friend or someone outside his family, then what would he/she do?

Kindly enlighten me on this respect, as I was quite pissed off by the way the officer at the window handled this matter. Or maybe it’s that I am missing on some facts.

Thanks,

Zaib.

    Dear Ashal Sir,

Why do you think they will not honour the claim? I even got official communication from them regarding the nominee change.
Would they have marked me as a defaulter or something like that??

    Thanks,
    Zaib.

  2. Dear Ahmad, are you continuing with the policy? The way your total experience went, I seriously doubt for the ability of HDFC honoring claim if it hapens at all.

    thanks

    Ashal

It’s all right mister. Just a little forceful talking and reminding the people at the branch of Insurance Ombudsman did the trick.
You are pretty stupid HDFC and your employees even more! No one at the branch had any idea why a proof was required in the first place…

  4. Dear Sir,

Please assist with your policy details and email address for us to investigate.

      Dear Sir,

Do you think I’m a fool enough to say that just like that? I have tried sending the mail to both the IDs many times and it has failed. I can send emails to all the other email ids without any problem.

I was trying sending a mail to service@hdfclife.com which is mentioned on your Customer Support page, and it was bouncing back again and again.
Only today, after reading your reply did I send it to the correct address. Will you be kind enough to at least change the support email id on your website! What a big and major oversight!
Anyway I have sent in my complaint. Let’s see what you guys can come up with…

      Dear Representative at HDFC Life,

I have already tried mailing my issue to the email mentioned on your website (service@hdfclife.com) and now the one you have mentioned here.

For your very kind information, the mail is bouncing and is undeliverable to both of these email addresses.

What the heck is this?? You provide wrong POCs for the people to get to??? This kind of behaviour is simply not accepted at all!!!

      Not so many regards,
      Ahmad Zaib.

This is the reason why i hate this HDFC bank…. Hardly you can get your things done at first time…

  10. Ahmad Zaib says:

@Manish: Whom do I approach in my case??

    1. Obviosuly in that case IRDA , First complain to the grivience cell of the HDFC Life and then move to Insurance ombudsman , IRDA and then Consumer Court

      Try help of akosha.com

  11. Ahmad Zaib says:

Thanks for the advice Manish. I’ll surely do the same. But in this case it is not a bank, instead a servicing branch of HDFC Life.

    Regards,
    Zaib.

  12. This should mostly be an internal bank policy to check for relationship proof which are very special one like WIFE , MOTHER , FATHER etc etc .

But its very strange that its asked by the bank , because for nominee , its totally a person wish, whom he wants to make . You can even say you want to make X a nominee , without saying that she is your “wife” .

I think you should ask them about the “rule” or “circular” which they are following and why its not same as other banks , I change the nominee as my wife in my ICICI Saving bank account and they didnt ask anything like that .

Demand meeting the bank manager and talk to him about it , also threaten them to complain to Banking ombudsman in case you are not satisfied with bank answer

    Hi Naveen,

It’s really frustrating to know all these things. But I would like to tell here that I have faced no problem at all in changing the nominee for all my MF holdings.
Only HDFC Life are asking for the proof, not even the PF office asked for anything when I applied for changing the nominee.

Ultimately it comes to the point that, whether I shall simply accept what they are asking, or shall I contact the complaints/grievance cell at HDFC?

    Thanks,
    Zaib.

    Hi Ahmad,

Always be ready to face such surprises when we need to do changes in our exisiting policies of insurers or fund houses..

Similar situation i faced with ICICI PRU , when i wanted to update my wife’s name as nominee in an ulip due to my Mom’s expiry they had asked for death certificate of my mother and my wife’s photo id and address proof & passport photo with my pan card copy attested…

No details will be asked when we buy any insurance policy, but when u want to modify details all sort of terms and conditions apply, strange but no other way…

Even for updating my wife’s name as nominee in ICICI DIRECT for my MF holdings , CC guys have asked for Address and id proof with passport photo of my wife….

In ur case, All married couples may not have marriage certificate , in my opinion if u have any other proof like id with ur name as husband , or an other policy with ur wife;s name as nominee may be helpful… just a thought…try it….

    Regards,
    Naveen Matta
