Penalty for not maintaining minimum balance in bank account at the time of closure of account ?

Hi,

I opened salary a/c with HDFC bank in 2010. I operated this a/c for 2 yrs. Later on due to relocation to another city and change of employment, I opened salary a/c with another bank and stopped using HDFC a/c.

When I stopped using HDFC a/c my a/c balance was 2,500/-. HDFC deducted this amount over the period of last 2 yrs and now my a/c balance is zero.

When I approached HDFC for closure of the a/c they declined to close the a/c and said that penalty of approx 4,000/- is due for not maintaining minimum balance. (As per HDFC Rs. 10,000/- should be min monthly balance).

What should I do now? Will this affect my CIBIL score if I keep the a/c as it is and don’t pay penalty?

Please suggest.
