NSDL and CSDL difference?

POSTED BY Sunil Kumar ON May 3, 2011 12:08 am COMMENTS (2)

Curious to know as what is the difference between CSDL and NSDL?

Does ICICI provide both services?

How does buying gold differ in CSDL and NSDL?

Thanks

Curious to know as I am able to buy shares from either BSE or NSE from my ICICI demat and trading account. Then why is that I am not able to buy silver from my ICICI account, if ICICI has an account with CSDL? Note, we can buy silver from http://www.nationalspotexchange.com who has tied up CSDL(believe).

Basically the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) depository have the trades done on National Stock Exchange (NSE) whereas the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) holds the ones from Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). There are also 22 other Regional Stock Exchanges.

By default all big broking houses have accounts with both the NSDL & CDSL. Unless one specifies explicitly it would be basically an NSDL account that they open.
