doubt about medical allowance

POSTED BY Ramprakash ON January 19, 2013 2:48 pm COMMENTS (5)

hi

my salary has 15000 towards medial allowance. I understand that I need to produce original bills to claim tax benefit. However my employer also wants us to produce original prescription as well. I am unable to produce prescription. Can I claim this tax free benefit on my own while filing ITR or is it mandatory to claim though employer.

Thanks

  1. Dear Bunker, it varies from employer to employer & there is no clear set of rules for the same. it’s the duty of employer or the concern staff to manage that any wrong claim is not filed.

    thanks

  2. Bunker Guide says:

As far as I know, doctor’s prescription is required by the employer only if the bill amount is more than Rs 500. Any bill below Rs 500/- does not require doctor’s precription to be produced for reimbursements.

  3. Dear Ramprakash, actually your employer may should demand only copies of the prescriptions & not the originals. The originals should be there with your for your own medical records for a future reference.

    Thanks

    Ashal

  4. Dear Ramprakash, relax. You can claim the same at the time of return filing.

    Thanks
