Charges for a Debit Card after expiry (NOT because of LOST)

POSTED BY Hemanth ON October 3, 2013 5:18 pm COMMENTS (9)

Hi,

I have a debit card of Union Bank of India. It will expire by October,2013.

The card is working fine now.

When I ask the customer care how to get a new debit card, they are saying that I need to pay an amount of Rs.112 to get a new debit card.

When I asked them, why should I pay for a card which is going to expire but not been lost and there is a no mistake from my side (because the card is not lost and it is working fine),the reply is that ‘This is the policy of the bank and I need to pay the amount to have a new card’.

Is it the same way all the Banks work ?? (I think  NO)

Also, are there any rules by RBI or someone else by which I can get a new debit card without any charges ??

Please help

Regards,

Hemanth

@Ashal — Thanks for your research and the answer.

As I already said,I have raised a complaint in the UBI website, they replied that they will replace the card free of cost if I go to the home branch.

Thank you all for your replies.

    Regards,
    Hemanth.

Dear Hemanth, from the info available on Union bank of India’s site, I interpret that card replacement is chargeable only if you have lost or damaged the card. The normal expired card ‘ll be replaced free of cost.

    Thanks

    Ashal

@Ashal, Vaibhav —- I have raised an online Complaint on this.Waiting for reply.

@Anshuk Jain —- May be you are using a salary account or some special accounts,so there are no annual charges.

    Hi Hemanth,

Have heard about such fee for the 1st time.
Not sure about PSUs, but most (maybe all) Pvt banks send you a new Debit card by post, about a month before your current card’s expiry – without charging any fee.

My suggestion is to raise an online complaint/grievance with Union Bank. Based on their response, you’ll get to know if this really IS a policy of the bank.

    Regards,
    Vaibhav

I am surprised that you guys are paying annual fees for debit cards!!! I don’t pay any such fees for my banking accounts..

Dear Hemanth, better to obtain guidelines from your bank and then we can discuss it.

    thanks

    Hi Ashal,

I am aware about the charges that the bank levy charges on a debit card yearly….I have no problem with that.

Her,my question is ‘why should I pay for issuance of new debit card because of the expiry of the old card and there is no mistake from my side( like I didn’t lost the card )

    Regards,
    Hemanth.

Dear Hemanth, are you ready to change your bank for 112 Rs. Almost all banks are charging for debt cards now a days. I do have banking experience with 3 banks (SBI, ICICI and IOB). The debit card is chargable on yly basis in all these 3 banks.

    thanks

    Ashal
