Advice related to Mutual Funds Selection

POSTED BY Gowtam ON March 22, 2012 5:25 pm COMMENTS (10)

Hi All,
Learned a lot through this Forum and Jago Investor Blog. Thanks to Manish and all whoever has been responding to the questions posted in the Forum. Based on the learnings, I have opted for a Term Insurance rather than a Endowment or Money Back. I am quite happy about my decision.
Since I am beginner in Investments, I would like to raise my hand and ask you all here to help me out in planning my Portfolio.
I have submitted my documents at MoneySights to open an account. That will get activated in sometime soon. Before that, I would like to understand the below points:
Planning to invest Rs.3000 per month as SIP on a long-term basis – For say, Three Years. I would slowly increase the contribution as my income goes up.
So, I would request you to let me know the Options that I could consider in Mutual Funds. One of them which I would like to consider is HDFC Top 200 as 1000rs per month and how about rest of the money.
Please suggest.
Thanks,
Gowtam

  3. Gowtam,

First of all let me tell you, very few start off on right track. You are one of them. Good that you have started off by looking into forums, reading articles are the best way to learn.

The basic thing is, you should understand what you are doing. Brokers should just be one who should be providing you what you are looking for.

    Two Thoughts :

1 . Mutual Funds : Options provided by Ashal and Nagarajan are good. You can choose one of them. If i was you i would have avoided balanaced fund.

So it would be Franklin blue chip or DSP top 100 or Quantum Long term Eq.

    2. Long Term defination.: 3 years is not long term. Aim for atleast 10 years. You should be aiming as long as you can.

Thanks for the apprieciation. And the reason I mentioned Long Term and 3 yrs…Certainly, I would want to keep the funds for 10 yrs or so. I am considering the 3 yrs as the review period of the fund performance.

    Hi Gowtham,

Good to see to invest MF 🙂

HDFC TOP 200 is good fund. Your selection is good.

For remaining 2000 Split into 2 Funds in different fund houses.

    My suggestions is:

    1. Rs. 1000 => DSP TOP 100 Fund or Franklin Bluechip
    2. Rs. 1000 => HDFC Balanced

    Regards
    Nagarajan S

  5. Dear Gowthan, thanks for becoming a jagoinvestor & do hope that you ‘ll not become a sleepyinvestor in future. 🙂

For your MF needs, Please invest full 1500 Rs. in HDFC Top 200 & another 1500 Rs. in Quantum Long Term Eq. fund. Both should be Growth option.

    thanks

    Ashal
